every now and then i'm in some situation where light sources seem like they could be slightly brighter or whiter than normal, and then i have to spend a while trying to be sure i'm not currently losing it. a normal person would never even think of worrying about that

One of the reasons I went full laptop is that they always let you adjust display brightness from the keyboard, instead of stuffing it in some grody menu.
Not the same thing, but I suppose I can relate.
* also have a displayport breakout board for using laptop panels as normal monitors, where you adjust brightness by holding the power button (ugly but still better). -

"Desktop Replacement" should be seen as a state of mind: not merely a hokey way of selling the biggest, loudest and toastiest laptops known to man.
Anything with video out and a big enough PCIe/USB/etc. interface could probably fit the bill (ideally a Noctua-tier fan, if laptops were still allowed to be chunky). -
