Here's a part of a Mastodon response I made to @andypiper following the Fediverse conference a few weeks ago. It came, I think from a similar place. An observation that there are opportunities for much more user centred, non-exploitative, memetic (in the sense of Dawkins' usage) evolutions of digital individual expression and the evolution of flexible but meaningful communities. Emulating each of the enshitifiers' products but with ethics and avoiding commercial exploitation is table stakes but misses the wider opportunity. As you're clear, the protocols have to be right to enable the Fedi. to see & achieve the many richer and better futures. The road there might be chaotic, but that's how evolution works."...Another important part was the Venn of different Fedi apps and their commonality. If we can get that right I think there's a possibly unacknowledged opportunity. While much of what's happening on Fedi consists of more ethical, human scale, non-exploitative emulations of the apps that money built; X, Facebook, Insta, TikTok, etc. Our killer feature could also be, as Dawkins calls it God of the Gaps. The universality of the core code and principles means we aren't, and shouldn't be constrained by what we've observed 'them' do. We're free to mash up, extend, remix in infinite combinations and evolve!
I'm a rubbish sax/clarinet player in a brass band but I could imagine using parts to build the band community for rehearsals, sharing manuscripts, attendance, membership management, etc but also exploit parts used/developed for Bandwagon, for concerts.
Another area ripe for Fedi-treatment is for building meaningfully enabled communities. I like the idea of guilds and apprentices based around an area of interest, such as art-watercolour or art-photography, etc. An environment nurturing knowledge building, skill adoption and verification, reputation building around a skill and then passing it on would, I'd hope build community and momentum as trust is a core fedi-attribute. In a modular Fediverse with a common core with malleable boundaries, the current apps are just some early manifestations. Others, using different mashups will appear and evolve. </brain dump>"
