-What type of desktop look and behavior do you like? (Windows or Mac?)
-Have you installed an operating system before?
-What kind of PC or laptop do you want to use Linux on?
-Do you want to play games?
-What kind of software do you regularly use on Windows or macOS?Knowing all this makes it easier to recommend the RIGHT version
But I promise it's significantly easier to install and use than most people think.

@CoastalCoasting PS: @codemonkeymike can attest to how easy it is for people to use. He upcycles computers, installs a unique version of Linux on them, and gives them away to all kinds of people with very little technical experience.

@CoastalCoasting Having started out as an idiot myself, trust me, any Linux that is not designed for specialists will do, e.g. a generalist like Ubuntu. Aren‘t there any initiatives in your area that help people along?

@killyourfm Arch + i3wm here. NixOS for servers. Once you taste the control, proprietary OSes feel like training wheels.

@killyourfm @CoastalCoasting correct. It's been amazing to see completely non tech people get on.
Getting it installed takes a little tech savvy (not much though) but once it's installed, there isn't much to deal with. Just use it!

Yes, there is a variant of Linux called "ZorinOS" which is very similar to Windows. Same shortcuts, same or similar programs, very intuitive and easy to use. But if you are not comfortable with computer stuff it would probably be easier to ask someone who is to install it for you.

@killyourfm I jumped over to fedora when they announced the EOL date for win10. At first I setup dual-boot. I expected to be bouncing a lot. But it turns out I rarely needed it. A few months later I just wiped windows altogether. Never looked back. Not even for work. One work app had issue with normal Wine, but adding it as a non-steam game under steams Proton worked flawlessly.
Now I got most of my family switched over to the penguine, even grandparents. They all say only positive things too. 99% of what they do is web based anyway so no surprise there. But they love their laptops are "fast again".

@killyourfm I installed Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7 on both my wife's and my mother's PC.
Trained about 1 hour with both, no problems and only minor questions since then.Difficulty: Both play games that only run with Windows. Wine and Lutris solved that.

In a world of easy virtualization, I just haven't found nearly as compelling a use-case for dual-booting as I did back in the 90s and first half of the 00s. -

I'm pretty close to this point as well. I haven't logged into my Windows install for over a week, and am quite happily doing everything I need in Arch linux.

It's short for distribution. The "variant" of linux that is used, like Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora etc. -
I'm pretty close to this point as well. I haven't logged into my Windows install for over a week, and am quite happily doing everything I need in Arch linux.

For me the last hurdle was getting World of Warcraft working in Linux. It was crashing constantly, then I worked out it was a Wayland issue. Installed XFCE using X11 and no issues whatsoever now.
Was able to do my first clear of Mythic Manaforge Omega tonight using Linux rather than Windows, so another couple of weeks for safety, and it can likely be scrapped
Can't wait!
