Does anyone use an MP3 player that they'd recommend? It needs a 3.5mm jack. Preferably small, with buttons rather than touch, but willing to compromise on that.

I've searched but they're mainly unknown (to me) brands with mixed reviews, or second hand, which probably means the battery won't last long.

@nicelady i use a SanDisk clip sport plus. Also FM radio, physical buttons more or less waterproof, mini-jack even bluetooth if you want to. Funny, when I search for it I get a Wolfgang player. The SanDisk is at least 7yo..

@nicelady bought a cheap Chinese one off Amazon that I use in my car. It has Bluetooth and a 3.5mm jack. Also has a speaker.

@nicelady @jalefkowit I cannot say enough good things about older SanDisk (formerly Sansa) MP3 players, especially if you're willing to put Rockbox on them.

The e250 in particular is a brilliant device. It has a hot-swappable microSD card!

@aud @nicelady I had a FIIO and it drove me crazy. The Sony Walkman E394 is the closest I've found to the old, simple players of yore.

@rhosyn @aud thanks, I was quite taken with the Fiio but I've seen a few reviews now saying navigation is a bit of a pain. I do really miss 00's tech sometimes.

Many thanks to anyone who shared or commented here. Lots of brands to look into, and it's always fun to share some tech nostalgia. I always run my tech into the ground so a bit sad that I don't have more old stuff to work with!

@nicelady @jalefkowit most of those brands have entry level options as well. I’m not into portable (DAPs & IEMs) anymore but when I was I was partial to Astell&Kern (as each have a house sound). Also the 2nd hand market is generally half retail. Feel free to hmu with any questions and I’ll do my best to help. Happy hunting!

I've searched but they're mainly unknown (to me) brands with mixed reviews, or second hand, which probably means the battery won't last long.

@nicelady I got a 128GB no-name Chinese brand (ZOOAOXO!) one for $28 on Amazon that seems to fit these requirements.

Does anyone use an MP3 player that they'd recommend? It needs a 3.5mm jack. Preferably small, with buttons rather than touch, but willing to compromise on that.

@nicelady Lots of recs in this thread for vintage gear, but if you want something new I’ve heard good things about FiiO’s SnowSky Echo Mini. The consensus seems to be that it offers a lot better performance than you’d expect for the price (around US$60).

The main limitation is that it doesn’t like very large music libraries; there’s a hard limit of 8,192 tracks. Depending on your library and needs that may or may not be a deal breaker.

FIIO’s new sub brand —— SNOWSKY The brand is focused on being youthful, fashionable, unique and fun, while also bringing the traditional FIIO hallmarks of quality and great user experience. RETRO NANO, SNOWSKY’s debut product, is inspired by vintage tape recorders but also packs much modern tech. It is not just an eye-catching Bluetooth DAC and amp - it is a musical device toy that you can explore and relive the music of any era. The ECHO MINI is not only the return of FIIO’s pure music player but also SNOWSKY’s first music player. From industrial to UI designs, it brings us fun and great playability. Plus the classical button operation, we can once experience the familiar notes of the past.
