@Firewire in terms of new stuff, I still need to figure it out really. I used to buy from play.com but that was a long time ago and looks very different now. Still have an archive and BBC podcasts are easy to download, at least. Is there anywhere you'd recommend?

@nicelady No, I was hoping you’d have The Answer! I have a bunch of old iPods that I keep fed with my ancient iTunes archive, but have been wondering how kids using mp3 players at school (who didn’t start collecting MP3s in 2005) are doing it.

Does anyone use an MP3 player that they'd recommend? It needs a 3.5mm jack. Preferably small, with buttons rather than touch, but willing to compromise on that.

I've searched but they're mainly unknown (to me) brands with mixed reviews, or second hand, which probably means the battery won't last long.

@nicelady No idea if they still make them but before the smartphone era I used Sansa Clip+ with aftermarket firmware called Rockbox. That was my primary podcast listening tool for years.

@nicelady@theforkiverse.com I don't have a FIIO MP3 player, but I do have a FIIO bluetooth DAC and love it. The reviews I've read for their MP3 players are great; they have the same audio system as the DAC, apparently. So that's another +1 for FIIO.

@nicelady @jalefkowit I cannot say enough good things about older SanDisk (formerly Sansa) MP3 players, especially if you're willing to put Rockbox on them.

The e250 in particular is a brilliant device. It has a hot-swappable microSD card!

@nicelady@theforkiverse.com a thread regarding the FIIO echo mini (sometimes called Snowsky; it's just a brand of FIIO) vs the Hiby R1, which people seem to love: https://www.reddit.com/r/DigitalAudioPlayer/comments/1j4nffp/hiby_r1_or_snowsky_echo_mini/

unfortunately I have yet to delve into either so I can't personally confirm what people are saying. But! Food for thought.

@aud @nicelady I had a FIIO and it drove me crazy. The Sony Walkman E394 is the closest I've found to the old, simple players of yore.

@Firewire @nicelady Whenever I've been buying CDs in the last few years, there was an option to download in various formats, even when buying the physical thing. That's what I'm working my way back towards. 😊

                    @nicelady

Some brands to take a look at:

Fiio (Snowsky Echo Mini has buttons) and Hiby (the Hiby R1 has buttons and touch), Hifi Walker too.

I have a Shanling that works great, but that touchscreen gets annoying sometimes.

@nicelady the zen nano plus is fantastic, though its storage is only 1gb. It uses a single AAA battery, and is not much larger than the battery itself. Rechargeable AAA batteries work well in it, too. Mine still works well, and I've never considered getting rid of it.

@nicelady i use a SanDisk clip sport plus. Also FM radio, physical buttons more or less waterproof, mini-jack even bluetooth if you want to. Funny, when I search for it I get a Wolfgang player. The SanDisk is at least 7yo..

@nicelady bought a cheap Chinese one off Amazon that I use in my car. It has Bluetooth and a 3.5mm jack. Also has a speaker.

@nicelady Cowon were very good 20 years ago and still exist, so they must still be OK.
