OpenAI employees pushed for the company to inform Canadian police about a user they thought would engage in real-world violence months before the person did just that, killing eight people in a horrific attack in Tumbler Ridge.

The company only reached out to police after the shooting had occurred.

We’ll never know if OpenAI could have helped save these people’s lives, but it’s certainly worth investigating.

The attack in Tumbler Ridge, BC is one of the worst mass shootings in Canadian history. Those killed include five students and a teacher.

Canada’s AI minister says he’s “deeply disturbed” by the reports and has reached out to OpenAI about their safety protocols.

This should finally push the government to take action on the harms of generative AI, but I don’t have high hopes when the minister is so deep in the industry’s pocket.

I truly can’t handle reading this news about OpenAI’s disregard for public safety on the same day as I saw Sam Altman equate the energy use of AI models with the energy use of humans, reducing humanity to a resource calculation to be managed so he can pursue his AGI god.

          I’m just so disgusted.

@parismarx Canadians should be absolutely outraged and demanding a full public inquiry into children, mental health, and AI

The fact we no longer have a disability minister but we have an AI minister makes me want to vomit.

@parismarx That's not new for Sam. At least he's not ranting about ergs wasted per person while on the mic these days.
