April is Spy Ordnance Month: Introducing the Welrod, a British bolt action, magazine fed, suppressed pistol devised at the Inter-Services Research Bureau (later Station IX). Welrod is a portmanteau combining “Wel” from Welwyn Garden City (located near Station IX) and “rod," gangland slang for a gun, as a way to obscure its purpose. (1/4)

Diagram of the Welrod from OSS Special Weapons & Equipment: Spy Devices of WW2 by H. Keith Melton. (If you do not have this book, it is a fascinating catalogue of OSS Ordnance & gear.) (2/4)
