@davidaugust @YakyuNightOwl@mastodon.world I always thought it was weird that the flu started at Ft Riley, Kansas but we ended up calling it the Spanish Flu. It's like the US decided to reject responsibility

@FaithinBones @davidaugust
It was called the "Spanish Flu" because Spain was the only European nation that didn't censor its mortality statistics. The US and other European nations all engaged in censorship during WWI. This gave the appearance of Spain suffering disproportionate mortality.https://www.history.com/articles/1918-pandemic-spanish-flu-censorship

@MaryAustinBooks @davidaugust but it was a way to say the flu originated in Europe when most governments knew it started in the US.

@MaryAustinBooks @davidaugust I'm an amateur genealogist and I've read many newspapers and obituaries from that time. It was awful to see whole families wiped out from the flu. That's one of the main reasons I always get a flu shot. Too many people don't understand the power of an epidemic.

"When you get back home, hunt up your wood-workers and cabinet-makers and set them to making coffins. Then take your street laborers and set them to digging graves. If you do this you will not have your dead accumulating faster than you can dispose of them."
