The responses to this have really shown me that the Bike People that I don't follow are actually very similar to the Linux ppl I don't follow and are part of why I avoided it for so long.

@MsHearthWitch yeah, heard. biking is a good way to have The Weather as an adversary, which... well, let's say it varies in its desirability.

(our current Weather is 90mph gusts of wind. i biked in something like this once with it as a tailwind and it sure was an experience. i've never passed so many cars so effectively in my life.)

@sandorspruit @MsHearthWitch @brennen ๐Ÿ˜„ Biking is so common in the Netherlands, I cannot imagine life without them. And come to think of it. Very young children learn to bike on tricycles, bikes with some extra wheels when learning to bike. Then the rest of us would bike on bicycles. And then some elderly people again get a tricycle when they want to bike but need more wheels support.

Is really much, but the joy od cycling is that you create your own wind. And do the same things you do when walking: eg. time of day, bring water, stay in the shade, donโ€™t exaggerateโ€ฆ it extends your reach compared to walking. Compared to a car, wellโ€ฆ No AC, no comfy chair and smaller reach. But way cheaper and no need for the gym!

                                      Oh dear.

I tried one time to cycle by 40C ish (in London, UK). This was a short trip (6km) to the office (where the aircon was waiting).

                                      That was not nice.

I don't know how different it is in other places with different humidity index but I guess not good either

                                        Mastodon, you are a influence...

Since I joined I have ditched most subscription stuff like Spotify, Amazon and Netflix.

                                        Made the swap to Linux.

                                        Started painting.

Now I am considering whether or not I could be a Person Who Bikes Places.

@MsHearthWitch depending on where you are, you might have โ€˜shared pathwaysโ€™ that are for biking and walking. For low stakes biking, I plan my trips around those and minimize street time.
I try not to be a fuck cars type cyclist because when cars fuck back they tend to win.
Watch out for exits to residential areas and other stop sign related things that overlap with sidewalks (the ones that let bikes on them), the drivers tend not to be looking for cyclists, and pedestrians move a lot slower. Iโ€™ve gone over the front end of a car before and I know other people who have as well (people donโ€™t stop at the sign, they stop where they can see the oncoming traffic, even if theyโ€™re not supposed to).

Local cycling bylaws might include lights, a bell, helmet, reflectors, etc.

@hermannus 42C and higher and a medical condition that responds poorly to heat would disagree.
