@MsHearthWitch sorry I saw the responses too late. I don't have any good tips on biking in hot weather either. 😩
I'll be honest, I often just take the tram or walk... or stay at home when the weather doesn't suit me. A light drizzle or snow are okay, but I don't need to be on a bike in 40Β°C, torrential rain, hail or a lightning storm. πŸ˜…
It's perfectly fine to do the things you like given the conditions you like / can handle.

@irgndsondepp Thank you! This is very encouraging, and yeah I live kind of between two cities so any major trips would require the car. BUT there are shops including a decent grocery store and many restaurants and cafes and parks in very very easy biking distance. Including a library that I cannot walk to given my current body but could bike to!

I've decided any and all future art sale profits are going towards my bike purchase fund.

@brennen It looks like it. The problem is I do not like The Weather.

Then do what I do. Only cycle if the weather is to your liking. I don't mind a bit(!) of rain but if it's too much the bike stays home. Cold is not a real problem, biking warms you up. Snow and ice are no go for me. Heat depends a lot on humidity. It's not all or nothing.

And I don't own any special cycling gear, I hate the look of "outdoor clothing" and refuse to be seen in anything neon.

@hermannus 42C and higher and a medical condition that responds poorly to heat would disagree.

@airikr @hermannus Yeah, I wasn't kidding when I said I struggle with The Weather. The last few summers have been blindingly hot WITH 90% and higher humidity for days on end. I can barely function in my house with AC, I cannot imagine biking.

@MsHearthWitch @airikr @hermannus I've got plans to make some chill packs (sodium sulfate + sodium chloride - imagine an ice pack stuck at 65F) specifically to try and get around the wild heat and humidity of the last few years. I've lived in several subtropical cities before, but didn't expect we'd have this weather where I live now, at least not so soon. If they're successful, I'll be using them indoors as well to reduce AC draw.

@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop Bikes are great (if you’re able to ofc)

biking places is a cool thing and it’s a cool thing that requires:
            1) bike
screw anyone who gatekeeps this stuff

              @MsHearthWitch

They say a person is known for their friends, and also that company [eg. tiome spent together] makes ones alike.

Surely this is why some are still at Twitter. Better a fascist than a bicyclist?

@spinni81 @MsHearthWitch This! I love to bike but I only do it if it won't deeply annoy me. My only allowance for biking clothes are a couple of pairs of trousers. I wish I had one of those tricycle bikes so I could wear long skirts and wouldn't have to worry about snow or ice? Or stopping in lights if my balance is wobbly or knees are angry that day. πŸ˜„ But being able to bike anywhere should I so choose? Wonderful and normal

@sinituulia I don't have balance problems (yet, my mom has them and I suppose at some point I will get there as well) but I do wear (long) skirts and dresses on my very normal bike. I don't even have a skirt guard on my bike, so far I haven't missed it.

@spinni81 My skirts and petticoats tend to be very very full (this one only has some 4-5 metres of hem at instep length, but the petticoat has 16 metres of hem ruffle) so even if they're not getting tangled into the bike gears or wheel, I need to gather them up in one hand when mounting or dismounting, so my actual legs don't get tangled in them when I do. πŸ˜„ This is fine, but not fun to do in stressful situations like when the light suddenly changes! If I was sitting on the three wheels, it would be much more pleasant probably.

My fairly ancient regular old bike looks much the same as that, except dinkier! There are skirt nets available for bikes but I never ever remember to get around to it, and it doesn't quite solve the dismount issue

Best if you find out if you also like bikes on your own though. Don't listen to much to the over passionate hive.

@MsHearthWitch i am a person who bikes to work (ebike) and i love it, but, i do live in a country where there are good bike lanes in most places.

And i dont bike when there's layers of ice and snow everywhere (though you can get spiked wheels for it) or when there's like, a storm. (Rain etc doesn't bother me)

Would recommend. I wish more people would try it for a month and see if it doesn't take.

(And no, my workplace isn't just down the road. I go 26.5 km each way)

                                      Mastodon, you are a influence...

Since I joined I have ditched most subscription stuff like Spotify, Amazon and Netflix.

@sinituulia Ok, I didn't picture a petticoat with that much ruffle. πŸ˜„ That's a challenge with any bike. I mean, when the safety bike became popular women started to wear trousers to ride them. So, you are in good company.

@hermannus @MsHearthWitch @brennen In 45C weather the only clothing that would make biking not feel awful would get you very quickly arrested.
