In 2000, the U.S. West Coast groundfish fishery was declared a federal disaster as 10 key species plummeted to below a quarter of their healthy levels.

Now, after 25 years of careful management, the fishery thrives once again. In October 2025, officials declared yelloweye rockfish (S. ruberrimus) rebuilt—meaning all 10 groundfish species are now at healthy stock levels, years earlier than expected.
