    @rbreich is machine learning inevitable? Probably.

    Is buggy, insecure software written by LLMs with insufficient review inevitable? No, that’s a choice.

    Is the replacement of human therapists with chatbots inevitable? No, that’s a choice.

    Are legal filings rife with confabulated citations, with nominal or no sanctions, inevitable? No, that’s a choice.

    Is the replacement of teachers with LLM curriculum inevitable? No, that’s a choice.

    @rbreich is unlimited cheap electricity for server farms while everyone else pays through the nose inevitable? No, it’s a choice.

    Is civil immunity for both vendors and users of LLMs when they cause harm inevitable? No, it’s a choice.

    Is human resource department candidate evaluation done by mindlessly parroting prior discriminatory candidate evaluations inevitable? No, it’s a choice.

      @rbreich

      Big Tech Bros want us to think their versions of AI software are as inevitable as rain, sunup in the East, or the law of supply and demand. Thanos imagined he was inevitable, too.

        @rbreich I work for a large tech company... well, I'm a consultant/contractor. For months, they've been pushing AI on us and every month they ask "what more can you do with AI?" And now they've put a stop to business travel because memory prices are up. BECAUSE IT'S DRIVEN BY THE DAMN DATA AI FARMS! Gee, it's like maybe they shouldn't be pushing for AI.

        HELLO?????

            @rbreich Isn't AI just a bigger faster database with a scary name? The smartest kid in school was never the one who could just repeat back everything the teacher said.

                  @bjadams44 @rbreich If it was a bigger faster database with a scary name, that would be somewhat okay. But it's really not, because if it was a database we could get the original data out of it.

                  We could then have attribution, instead we have mushed together things that are completely unattributable. But that is also a large part of the point, that these companies don't want the answers to be attributable. They want the answers to seem to come from *them*.

                    @rbreich

                    This tec is not made for humans, rather say to serve humans. It's an arms race.
                    An arms race for the ability to control - through tec - among those who already own the tec.

                    Of course this is not new, just scaled up (what an understatement) to absurd proportions.

                    Remember this?

                        @AG100pct @ZhiZhu @rbreich @pluralistic I love that Cory Doctorow boosted this. That’s how the pros do it, people: if someone calls you a genius, agree with them (at least outwardly)!

                          1. It's not inevitable ... it's an ice castle built on warm promises.
                          2. It's only here to stay so long as its fans and investors see a return on the huge investments they've been talkied into making. Since it's not really A.I. people will eventually see it bump into its massive limitations.
