    This rare bronze purse was found with six #gold coins still inside in the #Celtic oppidum (settlement) at Manching. It was originally sealed with an organic material, presumably a leather strap. The purse is rather small: 4.3x3.3 cm. The diameter of the smallest coin is 6.5mm.

    Dating ca. 200 BC.
    On display at Archäologische Staatssammlung München.

    @ninawillburger I was just trying to imagine actually using a solid metal purse and I have to say, it must have jingled like crazy... I imagine that also would let a prospective thief know from half a mile away.

      @ninawillburger

      Do you ever think about how those coins were last touched by a person who put them in there, maybe after buying something, in another time and place, fully expecting to take them out again later... but instead 2000 years pass before they are ever touched again?

      There is something very intimate about objects like this one.

          @tanavit @ninawillburger Maybe, but it could be too late after the theft... (Plus it's harder to notice the absence of a thing than the presence of a thing.)

            @nazokiyoubinbou @tanavit @ninawillburger I was thinking it would be unnecessarily heavy, no? But impossible to cut open. Might need to be tipped up to get the coins out and depending on how it was fastened that could be impossible...

              @sahqon @tanavit @ninawillburger The strap would be cuttable, but yeah, they'd go for whatever held the purse and just grab the whole thing. It's quite small after all.

                @nazokiyoubinbou @tanavit @ninawillburger Could be worn right under a wider belt and then it would be obvious if that was cut...? It seems to me that the only reason for this inconvenient purse would be to make stealing it impossible so I imagine they went to more lengths for that 😄

                    @nazokiyoubinbou @ninawillburger Perhaps it's an example of excessive hubris and show-off; the guy always traveled with bodyguards, the sound of the coins in this bell-purse warned others that he was a VIP. Plausible?

                      Problem is that these days you can't get shit for 6 gold coins. You'd be lucky to get some bread 'n' butter and a few scraps of cheese for that nower days
