    Your annual reminder that the USA is the only country where everyone has to manually file taxes every year. Every other country just deducts what you owe and doesn't bug you about it. The only reason it works this way is because Intuit lobbies to keep it this way.

    @seldo Wat? *Everyone*? Wow, TIL.
    Self-employed people have to do their tax returns manually but most people don't have to think about it at all.
    That's wild.

      @seldo@alpaca.gold maybe not everyone but there's a bunch of ways you may be legally required to in Germany even as an average wage earner, like when receiving compensational payment during extended sick leave, parental leave, or Kurzarbeit (company-wide temporarily reduced working hours to avoid layoffs).
      And you may even end up having to pay extra because of that - I did once.

          @seldo In Canada it's the same thing, unfortunately, and requires the use of paid 3rd party tax software or services. The Canadian Revenue Agency does provide autofill for most tax forms, so we've got that going for us.

            @seldo In The Netherlands you do have to file taxes (with some exceptions), but most information (at least regarding income, mortgage and bank accounts) is already filled in.

              @tdp_org @seldo - If you believe the BLS, there were 81,650 people employed as tax preparers in the US in 2023.

                @seldo to be fair I filed taxes but I have a much more complicated situation than most Canadians (assets in two countries with foreign investments and retirement accounts).

                But like yeah, for the average person, it seems way simpler.

                  @seldo I wonder if individual states could change their methods. Intuit isn't lobbying at a state level are they?

                    They do in fact lobby at a state level as well. They hate California's efile program.

                        @seldo Though, to be clear, most income tax has already been deducted beforehand by the employer.
