    Here are two facts that are going to shape the future profoundly:

    Doge destroyed America’s international USAID work, and China has an absolutely wild, tectonic surplus supply of solar panels.

    Right now, the United States has destroyed their international soft power infrastructure, particularly around health and preventable disease, at a moment where China can effectively give away enough solar power to decarbonize some country’s entire power grids for close to free.

      @mhoye It’s not about decarbonization.

      The pictures of solar panels covering roofs and ground is about individuals having the agency to create their own electricity. It releases them from dealing with the burden of either state or private power companies that never provided reliable nor consistent electricity. Cheap Chinese panels are providing an independence from an industry that is the definition of rent seeking.

        @adx that’s what it’s like for the individual. At the nation state level it is a different sport entirely.

          @mhoye

          The idea that China has the potential to become a respected world leader - more-so than it already is - not because of a vast military or because it's an economic powerhouse, but rather out of *simple altruism and kindness* is honestly delightful.

          All the superpowers have a lot of ugly secrets in the past - blood on their ledgers, as it were - and seeing modern leadership start to wash it away not be hiding it but simply by *doing good works* is a breath of fresh air.

          Decarbonizing third world nations with sustainable infrastructure (and not putting them deeply in debt to do so) is a darn good start.
