The oldest is asking about options for a standalone digital music player. I know people are rehabbing old iPods, but since that requires sourcing one, is there a decent modern equivalent? What say you, hive mind?

@wesgeorge depends on your needs. most of the good ones are android devices that will never be patched.

@sungo I think mostly for this use case, abandonware won't matter, goal is for them to have a device that isn't their phone to hold offline copies of music loaded via USB. Avoids distraction and dependency on streaming. Descent capacity, battery, and headphone jack, something to manage playlists maybe. Bluetooth nice to have but not required.

@wesgeorge (CW: Amazon links) Want to go retro? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DT3TQKRG That is the SnowSky/Fiio Echo Mini. It doesn't have playlist management but it's very cute and sounds decent. For best retro results, pair with the SnowSky Wind headphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F1C28TM6

@wesgeorge A used phone with all apps other than "Music" (and maybe one or two other related ones) deleted from the home screen is an excellent standalone music player. Used ones can be bought for cheap (my preferred place is Swappa), and you can often find ones with lots of battery life.
Every MP3 player I have tried from Amazon has been regrettable crap.
