    https://flipboard.social/@newsguyusa/116557592651175078 (per @newsguyusa) is seriously insane. Apart from the fact that only Congress can admit new states, not the president (Article IV §3 of the Constitution), admitting Venezuela as a state would mean that the Bill Of Rights and other constitutional protections would apply, which I suspect is the last thing Trump wants. And from a political perspective, would they vote Democratic or Republican? (His nativist allies would not be happy at granting full citizenship to a population that is mostly Spanish-speaking, either—and per Wikipedia, there are many indigenous languages recognized as well.)

        @SteveBellovin @newsguyusa Maybe the District of Columbia could slide in with less fuss while they're at it.

          @SteveBellovin @newsguyusa First Canada, then Greenland, now Venezuela. Sure seems like he just wants to add _anything_ to the USA and call it "Trumpiana" or something.

          A golden idol wasn't enough for him?

            @SteveBellovin @newsguyusa This just resurrects the problems (starting with racism) over former US control of the Philippines and the ongoing second-class-citizen status of people in places such as American Samoa and Guam.

            The last time we admitted new states, they were carefully counterbalanced between dominant parties. (Funnily enough, they’ve traded places in the 6+ decades since then.) As you point out, adding just one new state will make somebody/ies very unhappy politically.

              @20002ist @newsguyusa Yes—and residents of American Samoa aren't even US citizens.
              And the Philippines? I used to give a talk where I said that "Philippines" is a word that today we pronounce as "Afghanistan". The odd thing is that the conflict with the Moros could possibly have been avoided—their clerics felt that the US was not a threat, since it wanted only political and economic control, as opposed to the Spanish who wanted to convert them all.

                      @SteveBellovin @newsguyusa

                      It's really hard to do polling in countries living under authoritarian rule like Venezuela. I honestly don't know whether Venezuelans would tend to vote for a far-right party like the GOP as a rejection of their current socialist dictatorship, or tend to side with a center-left party as a desire for continued state intervention in the economy or rejection of the explicit racism of the modern GOP. My suspicion is that the Venezuelan diaspora would vote for the former, as the Cuban diaspora has, but I'm not sure about the folks that still live there.

                      Which, if anything, just shows how absolutely batshit insane the GOP is to reject Latinos, especially those that have extremely negative personal experiences living under socialism. It's hard to pick a potential voter demographic that's more likely to actively practice Christianity, embrace social and fiscal conservatism, be harder working, and be more entrepreneurial than Latinos. If it weren't for all the racism, I'm convinced Republicans would be cleaning up with a pro-immigrant/pro-Latino platform.
