Il Fatto Quotidiano: Trump, Nato, Germania: ma quale difesa europea? Franz Baraggino intervista Federico Fabbrini

Trump, NATO, Germany: What European Defense? Franz Baraggino interviews Federico Fabbrini

Near Future, by Franz Baraggino – With Donald Trump’s return to the White House, NATO is no longer a guarantee for European Union countries, which are reinventing themselves as “willing” and planning to rearm in response to the Ukrainian crisis. Whatever one judges them by, the solutions found so far have had little effectiveness, colliding first of all with the limitations of European institutions, but also with “national jealousies” that hinder the idea of a common defense, as explains Federico Fabbrini, professor of European Union Law in Dublin, currently Fulbright Schuman Fellow in International Security at Harvard, and author of the book ‘The European Army – Defense and Peace in the Trump Era’ (Il Mulino, 2026). Where does the EDC, the European Defense Community, pick up and relaunch with a single army to which, in 1952, Germany also joined. Today, it is preparing to build “the most powerful army on the Continent,” its own.
