Poll: Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
-
@SpindleyQ i mean if you're looking for a web forum where people with working player pianos are incidentally present then this is the one, BUT
@mcc it's possible my perception was warped by the online player piano enthusiast communities I found, but my perception was that because these things take up so much space and cost so much to fix properly, it was a rich old person's hobby, like collecting classic cars
That said... sometimes there are ways to sort of fix them IMproperly, for a few years, so it's possible that is a more widespread practice than I thought?

@SpindleyQ I think my question doesn't imply you can play the piano roll WELL…

(BONUS POLL)
Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
NOTES:
- If the answer is "none of the above" ,click "Show results". We can probably compare the previous poll to judge the significance of the scale of responses.
- Rather than worrying about differences between reel-to-reel formats, answer "reel to reel tape" if you can play at least one reel to reel tape format.
I wouldn't need to make a purchase but I would need to go visit my dad, because I know he has a reel-to-reel tape player in the attic. I used to listen to Joan Baez on it.

I'm a little surprised at the number of people who have a cassette deck player.
-
@christinelove honestly i'm as surprised as you are. i assume it's because nobody on mastodon throws away their old computers
@mcc guilty as charged BUT ALSO we have a working 5 disc CD changer (that is in regular use) @christinelove

@mcc What's a redbook CD?
I didn't choose vinyl or cassette even though I have a record player with integrated music cassette drive because it hasn't been used in years and I assume that both wouldn't work properly any more.

@mcc I never saw the point in 8-tracks because they're all sealed up and you can't see them spin... I would love a reel-to-reel, tho, those are big and spin well but it's expensive to get into here!

@mcc
We still have the piano rolls, and the player piano to play them! Photographic evidence attached!
This is an electric model, which when plugged in forces the air through the mechanism. I am not going to drag a whole piano nearer to an electric outlet at this time of night, so I can't provide a demonstration video of the thing in action. We haven't used it to play piano rolls in ages. Since it also functions as a normal piano, which is how we have used it, we have not needed it to be near an outlet. But we still have the paper rolls, in case we ever want to use it that way again!

@mcc I want a reel-to-reel at some point, but I haven't taken the time to get a space to set up my full system so it's pointless to buy one right now.

Poll: Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
@mcc I don't know many people that kept 8-track tapes around. Those were probably one of the biggest media mis-fires of all time.

I need to know how many would have clicked none of the above... -
Poll: Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
@mcc I think I have the hardware to play a CD on a PC. I'd have to pull a hard drive and stick in a BlueRay. I do believe it's SATA and not IDE.
I actually have a 94 civic with a cassette player in it. Very old school radio. When I bought the car a cassette on the dash still had it's guts hanging out the mouth of the player. So it might not play the whole thing and the tape might not survive it...if it does actually play at all.
Actually, I think my mom has my turntable. Old trunk style

@mcc As expected, Red Book is what most participants would tick. I have a bunch of still working CD/DVD/BD drives that are compatible with CD-DA. Mostly recent models. Miss the headphone jack, play button and volume dial.
