@christinelove honestly i'm as surprised as you are. i assume it's because nobody on mastodon throws away their old computers

Poll: Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
@mcc I have 4 devices that play music CDs, and none of them are dedicated CD players

@mcc @christinelove hmm, my 2020 car (and all the cars before it, this century) all had CD players. That might skew for CDs?

@virtualsid @christinelove you don't have to live in toronto long before you forget cars exist

@virtualsid @mcc @christinelove also game consoles, can’t those? But yeah, my notebook can play cds and I’d bet many others still can.

@gedeonm I asked Mastodon gGmbH to add a "None of the above" feature for multi option polls but they haven't taken it up

@thriftwicker if this is literally true, and you actually are going to get it back, let's say that counts because you've presumably either paid for or budgeted paying for that repair already before reading this poll

@mcc error, poll cannot record value 'none'

@mcc So what you're saying is, I need to get an 8-track player, just in case.
-
@virtualsid @mcc @christinelove also game consoles, can’t those? But yeah, my notebook can play cds and I’d bet many others still can.
@adriano @mcc @christinelove Good point! And I've even used my xbox to play music CDs in the last year!

@mcc Nah, I was kidding. But, I do have one 8-track! It has one of the albums I made on it... or so I have been told...
-
@SpindleyQ i mean if you're looking for a web forum where people with working player pianos are incidentally present then this is the one, BUT
@mcc it's possible my perception was warped by the online player piano enthusiast communities I found, but my perception was that because these things take up so much space and cost so much to fix properly, it was a rich old person's hobby, like collecting classic cars
That said... sometimes there are ways to sort of fix them IMproperly, for a few years, so it's possible that is a more widespread practice than I thought?

@SpindleyQ I think my question doesn't imply you can play the piano roll WELL…

(BONUS POLL)
Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
NOTES:
- If the answer is "none of the above" ,click "Show results". We can probably compare the previous poll to judge the significance of the scale of responses.
- Rather than worrying about differences between reel-to-reel formats, answer "reel to reel tape" if you can play at least one reel to reel tape format.
I wouldn't need to make a purchase but I would need to go visit my dad, because I know he has a reel-to-reel tape player in the attic. I used to listen to Joan Baez on it.
