Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
NOTES:
- If the answer is "none of the above" ,click "Show results". We can probably compare the previous poll to judge the significance of the scale of responses.
- Rather than worrying about differences between reel-to-reel formats, answer "reel to reel tape" if you can play at least one reel to reel tape format.
@mcc I still use my MZ-RH1 to do live recordings. I must have hundreds of hours of session & concert recordings on MD still.
-
i have like, a nonzero chance for reel to reel, but it depends on if this machine thats been in parts for years works when i reassemble it >.>;;
i answered yes anyway because i have at least one local friend that would let me use at least one working reel to reel. this is making me wish i had hung on to that 8-track player. and making me really wish i had looked into that pianola that appeared on the curb in my neighborhood last year

@mcc very sad to me that I cannot click "minidisc" despite having several minidiscs in my possession.

Never had an 8-track player (or 4-track!) and our turntable was left out of the moving van two moves ago.

@mcc 94% on CD?!

Wow, 50% vinyl is a surprise, cool.

@mcc the 2001 Toyota I had until 2018 could play a tape or a CD. That was the last time I touched a tape player.

@mcc If I didn't move to a different country like 6 times the answer would be "all of the above". Unfortunately, I moved to a different country like 6 times. All my possessions fit into two 30kg travel cases, a duffel bag, and a camera backpack

-
@swetland unfortunately they're all dying. Even the Hi-MD deck I imported from Japan was started showing issues playing some discs. Idk if it's something to do with the laser components or the recordable mediums degrading, but I fear they won't be functional for many more decades (unlike cassette players, even though the tapes might die, we can make new ones comparatively easily).

@coffee honestly relatable

@misty one observation is that there's no NOTA on this, so that means 6% can play at least one other format but not CD

@mcc I have difficulty believing the player piano numbers here... I bought an old busted player piano years ago, thinking, oh, it'll be fun to learn to fix this thing up! But it turns out "fixing up a player piano" basically means "reverse-engineering and rebuilding more than 88 individual custom hand-built wooden bellows" as table stakes, because the rubberized fabric starts leaking air after about 20 years, so even if it was perfectly restored in the 90s, it's fucked now.
-
@mcc I hate to admit, but I have a few modern vinyl records simply because I liked the look of them, and have no intention of owning a record player.
-
@mcc lol none. Unless a CD in an old XBox 360 with only a TV for audio output counts.
@phil if you have a compatible TV then this counts. otherwise no

@SpindleyQ i mean if you're looking for a web forum where people with working player pianos are incidentally present then this is the one, BUT
