Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
NOTES:
- If the answer is "none of the above" ,click "Show results". We can probably compare the previous poll to judge the significance of the scale of responses.
- Rather than worrying about differences between reel-to-reel formats, answer "reel to reel tape" if you can play at least one reel to reel tape format.
@mcc I think I might even have a splice block somewhere in my studio junk drawer.

Poll: Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
@mcc Vinyl only. I don't see a point in CDs – when it comes to ease, playing from drive/stream beats everything, so there needs to be a reason to have additional media. And vinyl has the biggest covers, lovely leaflets and looks pretty while spinning.

Poll: Which of the following music media, if someone suddenly handed you a piece of music recorded on it, would you be able to play without making additional purchases?
@mcc I can play cd, minidisc, tape, DCC, reel2reel, vinyl, hdcd, SACD, dvd-audio, blueray pure audio. The prerecorded DAT market was too tiny to bother. If I purchase a needle I can play shellacs.

@mcc I still have a CD drive in the attic, but I'd have to install it first.

@mcc For me its CD and a 50/50 on vinyl. I have a vinyl player in the basement but no vinyls to test if it works.

That's actually an interesting question. My immediate interpretation was "which of the corresponding players in working condition do you own" (which I myself do for everything except 8-track), but thinking deeper, it's that, but also "whether you know someone who owns one and would let you use it"

I wouldn't have thought to delineate between the two, but I can see how they're different, now that you mention it.

@mcc Oh how much I miss my reel to reel.

@mcc I never had an 8-track because by the time I was trash-picking my own stereo components as a teenager I had the impression they sounded bad and were inconvenient. But of course I had a turntable and a cassette deck because you needed those!

@0x09 @mcc You are so right about the sound quality. But I had a 2-XL so I could fake it.

The 2-XL robot represents an early example of an electronic toy that both entertained and educated. Short for “To Excel”, the toy encouraged learning through interactivity.
