      Seriously, just have channels on a group chat, and it would be 95% of the way there for a little chat like I do with my friends. But our chat is too busy for one single channel

        @JessTheUnstill Yeah, there's at least one group I'm in where that really would be the answer. It's only like a dozen of us but it's a LOT of chatter throughout the day.

          @JessTheUnstill 10000%. Spaces with rooms and moderation features would simply end the alternatives conversation.

            @mttaggart there's still the issue of requiring a cell phone, but it'd still work for many people

              @JessTheUnstill @mttaggart alas, requiring a smartphone for onboarding is a major blocker for multiple of my friends.

              (I’m tempted to have a dedicated “burner phone” just for onboarding people I know in person)

                @JessTheUnstill

                Building a 2000s era forum isn't even difficult enough to be a college class project anymore. Youngins' want privacy. The lack of a search function was the main benefit of #Discord. Any of us could just make a site that does that. You just have to make a site that works like a YouTube comment section, allows embedded video/audio, and isn't publicly visible without an account. That is doable, so that has to already exist somewhere. Where do we tell folks to rally around?

                  @VictimOfSimony Matrix is terrible, but it is what it is if people are looking for some encrypted discord. Unless your discord community is small enough to just use Signal.
