- decentralized chat
- with "multi-room" spaces like discord
- and plural-friendly features like changing your nickname and avatar per-roomthen the best option seems to be Cinny client for Matrix: https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/cinny/
you can change your display with /myroomnick and /myroomavatar .
there's really no perfect alternatives sadly, Discord just does too many things and nobody else does ALL of them
but Matrix seems to have the best ratio of good stuff to bad stuff right now
@nycki yeah I’ve noticed that out of all the matrix clients out there, cinny has the most discord-like ui, although there is no voice chat there right now.
though I suppose you could always use something like mumble in conjunction with cinny

@crimsonfall I noticed that @sophie hosts a free Jitsi server so I will probably use that for the time being but yeah I should look into Mumble

@crimsonfall@mas.to @nycki@bark.lgbt it isn't perfect but just to mention it. Teamspeak6 implemented matrix for their chats and they do federate which I find pretty cool. It isn't perfect and they got quite some quirks last time I checked (e.g. non-spec compliant image implementation).
But you can write someone in teamspeak from your own homeserver or the other way around. That's at least some synergy. -

@nycki It should be said that, at least on Element, changing your account's display name or avatar seems to override all custom nicknames and avatars for rooms... I don't know if it's the case on Cinny but it is something to be aware of. Other than that, yeah, it's the best alternative out there... (See also https://joinmatrix.org.)

@Zelzius @SteffoSpieler look, at this point I'm tired of people criticizing everything that isn't a perfect discord clone. I WANT diversity, I want clients to try new things, I want interesting flawed experiments, and I don't want everyone to give up and say "wahhhh but its not discord".
Personally? I think XMPP is better! But Matrix is closer to what people expect, and of the clients available, Cinny is the most discord-like experience, so I'm recommending it for people who want an easy transition.

Just putting this out there: There's also the Fluffychat Matrix client if you'd like a consistent experience across Android, desktop Linux, and *The Web!*

@nycki recently I found @commetchat which is a nice feature-rich client for Matrix and I'm giving it a try. Not perfect yet and pretty new, but... Meanwhile I like FluffyChat, specially on mobile. Quite better than Element, IMHO.
But Cinny is also nice!

@nycki If you are looking for something with a better user interface/experience, you could try Mattermost. The only downside is that its servers aren't federated in the same way as with matrix.

@nycki @DeltaChat is excellent and does the job very well.

@nycki Hell, as a big fan of Matrix, even I will point out it's far from perfect
But the alternative is currently boiling the frog for requiring ID, *immediately* after having their chain of custody breached for that very information, which makes the choice fairly straightforward
