the hi hat shuffle work in this song is so poor, producers wrote based on a 6/8 feel but didn’t notice how the 16th note straight hi hats that don’t even line up with the groove, annoys the shit out of me!

@nnirror good enough song either way ofc...possible that shift was on purpose but who knows other than the producers
️i'm going to hear that shift now tho, thanks for pointing it out

@tsrono yeah it’s still better than most pop songs! it just detracts from being truly great imho. sounds like a metronome was left on underneath human playing

@Cognessence to me that sorta disconnected 'cold' feel that some pop leans into is part of the appeal. it's almost a hyper-perfected version of the standard pop song of the 1900s, taken to extremes. i don't often click with those but this track worked in that context for me (but would i probably really like a warmer, more humanized/live/vulnerable version? probably!)

@tsrono @nnirror That's a really interesting point. I'm not just backtracking - I agree with you in general about that disconnected "cold" feel - paradoxically packaged in something hyperreal / highly produced. It's probably part of why I'm addicted to certain K-Pop tracks! So maximalist and in some respects virtuosic, but so artificial and "cold" too. I too really enjoy that hyper-perfected sound (so it's funny hearing people criticise it for those things. Subjectivity, eh?)
It's all good. Humanized/live/vulnerable...disconnected, perfect and cold...why not be open to it all?
In terms of Olivia Dean specifically, I do quite like this track as it is a little more restrained and slightly mysterious, and the arrangement is pretty lush:

liking this track too, i definitely need to give more of her stuff a listen. supporting vocals really make it & add to that mystery.
