What does the EU have to do with food quality and food safety?

What does the EU have to do with food quality and food safety? And what about importing foods from elsewhere, do those have to comply with EU standards? (yes)
We made a video answering these kinds of questions from the internet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RA5JrG3K1QQ&list=TLPQMTAwNTIwMjb6WhV72NfnRg&index=5

@hpod16 Fantastic video! I am familiar with this topic because our team at JRC supports EU control labs in monitoring food, feed and seeds for the presence of GMOs

@emmecola my dad works with food and he kind of told me off for not mentioning the JRC and EFSA.
I think weβre going to have to do a part two about food to make up for it one day -

Also: what kind of research are you on now?
I love food science, I did my first ever tiny work experience in the R&D lab at Kraft, and I did some stuff with microbiology and determining sell-by dates -

I love food science, I did my first ever tiny work experience in the R&D lab at Kraft, and I did some stuff with microbiology and determining sell-by dates@hpod16 I work as a consultant for the EURL GMFF team in Ispra, Italy. Basically, we assess the performance of GMO detection methods, ensuring they have good sensitivity and specificity
I am an IT consultant, I mostly do data analysis and web development
EURL GMFF
The European Union Reference Laboratory for Genetically Modified Food and Feed (EURL GMFF) performs the scientific assessment and validation of detection methods for GM Food and Feed as part of the EU authorisation procedure. It also assists National Reference Laboratories (NRL) for GMO control in the EU Member States. The EURL GMFF is supported by the ENGL, the European Network of GMO Laboratories, and hosted by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission.

@emmecola
Wow, there are GMO detection models?
Does that mean you analyse the genome of a given plant/crop? -

Actually, I maintain the GMOMETHODS database, which is a public collection of high-performance methods that labs can use to monitor food/feed entering or circulating in the EU
