Did Canada really pass a law making at least ten million more people into citizens, without even a background check? I don't recall much debate about this last year; seems to me we should have given this some study.

Millions of Americans can now claim Canadian citizenship by descent. But they have to prove it | CBC News

Amid rising tensions in the United States and increased global volatility, many Americans are looking to Canada — and their roots — for a possible way out following recent changes to Canada’s citizenship rules.

As I understand the articles, the new citizenship law does not say that anyone with Canadian ancestry has a right to Canadian citizenship with certain hoops they must jump through, but that such persons *are* Canadian citizens, and they merely need to prove their ancestry to have full rights. That seems to me like an important difference.
