@akareilly Similar situation for schools in Germany. Only the book bans are a (IMHO not far away) future.
Given the rhetoric coming out of Merz, I would not be surprised. The CDU/CSU wishlist is indistinguishable from US Republicans on most points.

Exactly. It took a lot of fighting by the Stop the Child Murder activists, a movement needed everywhere.
US Americans sacrifice children to the gun lobby. European countries sacrifice children to the car lobby.

@j5y7 the 80s assault weapons ban largely criminalised certain accessories. It was a big ridiculous pantomime of safety and security for the politicians and media to get all jazz hands about. It did nothing to address fundamental issues. Passing something similar would end up just as watered down by the gun lobby. The current supreme court is so pro gun, that they're in practice little more than a 2nd amendment enforcement mechanism.

@akareilly i'm not even convinced social media is bad for kids. exploitative corporate social media that constantly signal boosts the worst content, that is designed to be addictive, certainly is bad for kids. but i don't think that means we couldn't have social media spaces for kids that are moderated, largely safe and not built to exploit
but where would be the profit in that?

@AlexanderMars This is understood, but the original premise of the post is what politicians would do if they actually cared about child safety. Passing meaningful gun legislation falls in that category.

@j5y7 It's not possible in the US, the gun lobby owns too many politicians and federal judges. For all the politicians performative handwringing, pearl clutching and of the children thinking or praying; none of them will do anything.
I've had it with the US; I'm leaving and raising my kids somewhere that I don't have to worry about them getting shot because someone had a bad day at school.
