@em_and_future_cats @akareilly The problem with America here is that we tend to farm out design ideas to architectural firms that often have no understanding of child development and learning. They check a supplier who will sell them fancy “equipment” that appeals to adults who know nothing about how imagination helps children grow mentally. Keep it simple! And ask someone who knows something other than how to pave a parking lot. Throwing money at it isn’t always the best answer.
@bouriquet @em_and_future_cats @akareilly speaking of ‘farming out’,
I’d love to see 4h type spaces at schools with gardening, planting, etc. -
If politicians gave a shit about children, the schools would feature:
- HVAC systems that cleaned viruses out of the air
- at least two child psychologists on staff
- age-appropriate lessons to help children identify abuse
- funding for well-paid staff in numbers sufficient for a buddy system to reduce the chances of abuse
- arts education and after-school clubs to provide third spaces for kids
- massive, safe playgrounds
- protected biking and walking infrastructure from the school to residential neighborhoodsInstead we get “parents’ rights”, funding cuts, book bans, and car-centric infrastructure that kills pedestrians and bikers.
If social media is bad for kids, THEY NEED ALTERNATIVES.
@akareilly Unless the parents want to support their trans kids.

@akareilly Children don’t need social media. Adults need children to have social media so that we can market to them.
That said, the solution is for parents to actually parent their own children. Not to create a dystopian online identification regime that will be used to identify and persecute dissidents.
Another solution would be to make commercial social media illegal. Much better solution tbh.

@akareilly@hachyderm.io I would like to add psychologists for the staff. My mom was a teacher (kids aged 3 to 6), so in my life I saw several of her colleagues, and many of them would have been better off for some support. -

@akareilly Music and Art should never be a budget line item to eliminate. It feeds the soul and gives children an opportunity to express themselves in ways that are not verbal.
-
@akareilly The problem with being able to identify abuse is that once you can do so, the world starts looking really disturbing.
Just knowing the statistics has made going to tech conferences with a few hundred people disturbing.

@akareilly I have not been to a tech conference and now I worry

That's true. And not kosher.
@project1enigma @akareilly @Npars01 They would be if we slaughtered them under rabbinical supervision.

@macacator @akareilly school shootings are a psychological health issue not a gun issue

@akareilly Most of the comments in this thread discuss issues that are decided at local/state levels & reinforces why it's important who gets elected to school boards, city/county commissions & state legislatures. Clark Cty School Dist (Nations 5th largest) covers Las Vegas & smaller neighboring towns. Until 2 Mom's for Liberty members got elected to the Board, parents weren't paying much attention to the power the board has. My daughter has been a HS teacher for 20 yrs. She's seen some things.

@jarinks @akareilly but it's still an issue that's not being addressed

We have to make this happen. We have to shake hands with parents and say, "I will show up to your fight."
It is not too late. More people than ever can see that the system is causing harm.
Find the local ppl making noise and join them. Tell your friends.

@akareilly also, childhood poverty is right there. that’s literally a problem you can throw money at to make it go away. very directly.
people want easy solutions, here’s a problem where they can have one.

@akareilly Similar situation for schools in Germany. Only the book bans are a (IMHO not far away) future.
