I learned the basics of how to fly a (simulated) Airbus A320 this week!

Going from being completely overwhelmed to knowing what some of these buttons do, was a very satisfying experience.

Taking off is easier than landing, though! πŸ˜…

@blinry Oh I haven't seen mention of Flightgear in many years! Good to see it's still there.

I was pretty impressed by #FlightGear, the GPL-licensed flight simulator! If you crank the graphics settings up, and don't look too closely, it looks pretty okay!

Here's a flight over Hamburg! I think flightgear pulls data from OSM. Can you find the CCH? The people in the stadium in the front are in for a surprise in their next game, though! πŸ˜›

@blinry So the buttons are explained in the simulator?

FlightGear doesn't try to be a "fun" game, but a simulator that's as realistic as possible.

Almost all buttons in the cockpit do something, and referring to real books, manuals, and charts worked really well!

          Here's FlightGear's cockpit of a smaller plane, a Cessna 172P.

@blinry You're talking about the trees that grow in the stadium, right?

Some tips and tricks for #FlightGear:

Ctrl+C labels and highlights the controls in the cockpit.

The browser map (Equipment -> Map (opens in browser)) was much more helpful for me than the in-game ones. You need the `--httpd=8080` launch option for this.

Another open-source project has a brilliant documentation of the A320's controls: https://docs.flybywiresim.com/pilots-corner/a32nx/a32nx-briefing/flight-deck/

By the way, #FlightGear also allows you to fly:

                        - Hot air balloons
                        - Helicopters
                        - Gliders
                        - Airships
                        - The freaking *Space Shuttle*!

Hats off to the devs, who have been building/maintaining this for almost 30 years now!
