A guy called my dad and said he’d won a million dollars in a contest! All that was needed was to advance $1,000 to cover fees

My dad told the guy he would happily split the winnings, $500K each, if the guy paid the fees for him

    The guy hung up

@neilk A kid called my dad & said he was his grandson and in jail in Racine, Wisconsin. My dad says, “Jimmy?” (He doesn’t have a grandson named Jimmy.) The kid said, “Yes, Grandpa. It’s me, Jimmy.” My dad said, you’re in luck. The police chief of Racine, Wisconsin is an old friend of mine. Put him on! The kid hung up.

@neilk A guy called me from some kind of tech support. He said he needed my social security number to activate the support. I told him, “one… two…” And then I stopped. The guy said, “Go on.” And I said, “That’s it. Twelve. I’m really old. I got one of the first ones.” The guy told me to do something unsanitary to a part of his anatomy and hung up.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

@neilk I remember once getting into an argument with a guy calling about my Windows machine. I legitimately only had a Linux laptop. He called me a liar, and insisted I did, indeed have a Windows machine. I hung up on him.

@neilk this is hands-down the best response I've heard of to an advance fee scam.

@commonst @neilk I must have had the same guy a few years back. I gave him all the details of... an antique CP/M box I used for word-processing. "I don't believe you! You don't have a computer at all!" *click*

@commonst @neilk because his victims are normaly unaware what kind of system/OS they have. "I have a computer, no I don'T have Windows." Rarely they get to someone who knows what's up and then it can get funny.
