Confession time. I often can’t look at posts that have more than a couple hashtags. They just feel so cluttered like a bad ad. I have to scroll by quickly.

@DulceMaria It depends if the hashtags are relevant or they are taking a scattergun approach and going something sticks.
Also regarding screen readers, I have read that hashtags should be separate from the main text as it makes it harder to follow the text with a screen reader.

4 hashtags does seem a sensible maximum.
I can’t remember using more than that in a post.

@DulceMaria I understand this an artifact of other social media platforms that require this. Sadly the behavior is sometimes brought here.

@missingbrighton ah for me it doesn’t depend on the hashtags themselves

@DulceMaria one of the people I follow who has a visual impairment commented that they considered four hashtags to be the limit they could accept. I now follow that recommendation when posting photos.

@wilpercy @DulceMaria Yeah, as a Blind Mastodonian I support that. I don't hear alt text till after the hashtags are read by my screen reader, and 4 is the upper limit for me personally before I move on.

@ChristineMalec Thanks for the tip, I'll try to limit myself to four. BTW, my alt texts are usually short, just a basic description. Usually it's the toot that is important. I wonder whether I should write alt texts that describe photos in more detail @wilpercy @DulceMaria

@ChristineMalec @wilpercy @DulceMaria Thanks. I prefer to put alt text in my toots, I've seen some apps that don't display the alt text if they can display the image... I find alt text useful for understanding what I'm seeing in the image!

@ChristineMalec How do you feel about long alt texts if you don't mind me asking?
For me, as a sighted person, the essays some people write for alt tags completely cover the image, which seems kind of ironic as I can't the see the image! But for you it might be great?

@greenpete @wilpercy @DulceMaria It's totally dependant on many things as varied as the image, the writing style, and my mood, so it's hard to answer, and I absolutely don't mind you asking. Gosh Masto is such a polite place! I didn't know alt text covered up the image, I guess I imagined it as lines underneath like subtitles or something.
