@randahl As a Dutch citizen, I feel ashamed of Rutte’s actions. I can somewhat understand why he is doing all this (to keep NATO together). But it would have been wiser if he had kept his dignity and said, “I will not take part in this,” and stepped down.

But thinking about it "out of the box", perhaps the only way forward in any communication or interaction with americans is just lie. Lie our asses off to get what we as Europeans want. It seems it's the new norm.

This (Rutte) is the guy who screwed over immigrant families in the Child Benefits Scandal. Maybe Trump saw something in that that he admired.

I hate to think what Rutte admires in the other direction.
