@ZenHeathen I liked Layton, but a politically connected friend told me he and Harper shared the goal (obsession perhaps) of destroying the LPC (Harper would get the “right-leaning” Liberals and the NDP would get the progressives). Mulcair was chosen because they thought he could carry Quebec
AND appeal to disaffected Liberals. My friend thought it was a stupid idea. His comment to me when I expressed my reservations about Mulcair and voting NDP was, “he’s no different than Harper. Vote for Trudeau if you want someone more progressive.”
