    @thomholwerda Why the fuck is darts even gender segregated in the first place? Probably only because men can't stand to lose to women.

    @LordCaramac @thomholwerda It's not exactly gender segregated, in that there are no specific men's competitions, men and women compete alongside each other in the big tournaments - and indeed just a few weeks ago Beau Greaves became the first woman to win a major ranking championship.

    I assume the rationale for having a separate women's competition is the same as with snooker (a game I'm rather more familiar with): because the game is culturally so dominated by cis men, having distinct women's events allows talented women to develop their game in a less overwhelmingly male environment. And again, the best female snooker players do compete on the world tour, which is not segregated.

    (I'm not aware of any decisions being made regarding trans players in snooker, but I might be wrong).

    In that respect, it's like having separate competitions for young competitors.

    However, that makes banning trans players even *more* absurd. Because there's no sense in which sex-assigned-at-birth can impact upon ability, women's tournaments are solely about development, and clearly trans/nb/other people would benefit from that every bit as much as cis women.

    If the whole point is to allow darts (and snooker) to be accessible outside of a highly masculine environment, then it makes sense to simply exclude cis men and let everyone else compete. What they're doing is excluding trans people purely for the sake of excluding trans people, and it's appalling.

      @LordCaramac

      Different point as it takes gender separation as a given, but same sentiment:

      "Why were women banned from football? ...

      There were worries that the success of women's football would damage the popularity of the men's game once the war was over."

      Link Preview Image
      Why were women banned from football?

      Following the success of the World Cup, women's football is on the up. But it wasn't always the case. At one point, it was banned altogether.

        @quixoticgeek @thomholwerda why is Chess even gender-segregated?

        And if it is, why isn't there gender specific Nobel prize? If it has to be absurdist, it should be so to the end.

        How about gender specific United Nations? It's a useless organization anyway, so why not two (or more)

          1. Why tf is there “women’s chess”?
          2. why tf can’t trans people compete?

          But I’m honestly still stuck at 1.

          @avuko

          Men don't want to lose against women.

          Society has less encouragement for women to enter competitive sports ➡️ fewer opportunities ➡️ less practice, sponsorship etc.

          So a girl would have to run with the boys for equal development and education.

          Back to top.

            @thomholwerda *women's* darts!? Why the hell is that a gendered competition?!

            (Let me guess, the women were winning too often 🙄)

            @akamran@indieweb.social @thomholwerda@exquisite.social isn't that the reason they have different gendered competitions for shooting sports at the Olympics?

                    @michal @thomholwerda I’ve seen a post-hoc rationalization for having gender categories in chess based on historical biases regarding access to the game to begin with, but those biases are also in place for trans folks, and also apply to different ethnicities as well. I don’t see anyone proposing having, say, a Black category for chess, for what should be extremely obvious reasons. And chess already has ELO classes, which already neatly captures all the things that divisions exist for.

                    @fluffy women-specific chess competitions exist because men's competitions are full of intolerable misogynists who drive women away from the sport.

                    A more radical solution would be ban these assholes.

                      Look, banning trans women from sports is total bullshit, but at the very least you can see why hundreds of years of propaganda and misogyny in sports would make people assume trans women have an unfair advantage. It's bullshit of course, but at least I can follow that flawed logic.

                      But darts? Motherfucking darts? You're throwing objects weighing 12-32 g (depending on preference) at a board designed specifically to be penetrated by darts. Fucking children play this game.

                      If you ever needed proof this was never about protecting women, just think of how these nazis are banning trans women from darts.

                      DARTS.

                      @thomholwerda I'm not surprised in a world where this is a thing

                      People deranged entirely what is common sense in a way they don't even think what they are banning trans people for.

                      Not that humanity doesn't have history of this kind of apartheid: not long ago there were actual political discussions if allow or not lesbian woman in to public bathroom.

                        Trans women have been banned from women's darts.

                        Darts.

                        The ban is based on some English woman's "study". The woman in question is a known TERF.

                        Again, let me reiterate: darts.

                        Darts.

                        All the arguments are bullshit, the TERFs are just making it damn obvious

                          @quixoticgeek @bithive @thomholwerda that's 99% of the reason any women's sport exists. Just look at all the events that got split in the Olympics after a woman beat a man to a medal.

                            @quixoticgeek @bithive @thomholwerda is that true? I've never heard of a men's chess competition — there are women's events and there are open events. if that was the reason, wouldn't they actually segregate it?

                              @andrewt @quixoticgeek @bithive @thomholwerda You are right, there is no chess competition for men only. (At least none I am aware of.) The women’s chess competitions, leagues, clubs, etc. were introduced to a) make chess more popular for girls and women and b) protect them from the sexist lines and harassment of some of the male participants.

                              Two valid reasons that make me very upset, actually. 🤬
