    Them: "How did humans invent beer and wine? They must have been so smart!"

    Me: Depressed, leaving out fruit juice in cups and wet oatmeal in bowls for so long it smarts to smell like alcohol...

    ...might still eat it because I'm too tired to make anything new.

      @tinker So true. Like with many things, the "invention" of alcohol for human consumption was figuring out how to do *safely*, *reliably*, and *reproducibly* something that appears easy if you don't care about any of those things.

          @tinker We had some back-of-the-fridge apple juice that turned to cider one time. A little cloudy, smelled great. My wife was appalled, but I had a bunch of it before dumping the rest.

            @tinker
            At the beginning was fungus - mycorhizian relation allowed plants to set a foot on the land. Fungus digesting some substance from the soil, and giving it to the plants.
            Without fungus, no plants, no forest.

            They also help making cheese, wine, beer and bread possible.

            If I had one more lifetime, I would spend it studying fungus.
