I'm not opposed to it being referred to Standards and Privileges in principle, but Kemi's made a huge error (as is her wont) pushing for it before the 7th. It looks and is nakedly political now and, if the rumour mill is to be believed, has rallied the PLP behind Starmer and the party.

Tomorrow will be a farce, a silly vote won by the government with a big margin. The real battle will be after Thursday next.

Starmer's speech to the PLP was apparently a banger:

"It’s important to see the bigger picture here. They want to stop this Labour Government. And we know why.

"Because we are the first government for generations to take key parts of the public realm back into public ownership. They don’t like that, but we’re doing it.

"The first government for generations to give rights and power to workers, to renters, to the less fortunate."

"The first government for generations prepared to stand against wealth interests, to raise money and put that into public services and fighting child poverty. They don’t like it, they said they’d reverse it.

"We have a mandate to do all of those things. And they are not going to stop us."

He concluded: "When we stick together and fight together we are so much stronger."

I would've mentioned the wildly successful decarbonisation of the grid too, but hey, that's great.

Signals the direction he'll take after the locals too, I think.

I like this. The mythology that's built up through the various furores is absurd, and it's time to reorient around the achievements and improvements accumulated so far. Virtually everything is getting better, albeit slowly, and they need to get better at highlighting that and taking it to the other parties rather than being silent on achievement and playing defence on trivia.
