@graham_knapp @virtualbri Sounds to me like the companies are banking on exactly the insecurity and fear and statistically implausible expectations that universities build into PhDs.

I had so many friends who truly believed that they were being trained specifically to become academic researchers or educators, zero competence to do anything else whatsoever, and that thinking even momentarily about a different career (or, in some cases, a teaching-centred career) was shameful.
