@griffin30007 @nblr It's a clever but silly-looking "lockout* system that lets you use one AA or two AAAs, but without letting you mix different cell sizes at once. So it's actually meant to allow you to use whatever you happen to have on hand instead of needing one specific kind of battery.

No. They cross over so you physically cannot use both at the same time.
You choose one or the other, and if you only have one in stock, you don't have to go out and find the other type!
