It’s a boy for the Queen! The baby, her fourth, was born at 8.20pm last night at Buckingham Palace. The new baby will be third in line of succession to the Throne. Independent Television interrupted the opening of The Plane Makers at 9.13pm to announce the royal birth in a newsflash. The BBC did not interrupt its programme.

Joey - short for Josephine had trouble laying an outsized egg, so vet David Blackmore of Melton Mowbray carried out a Cesarian on the budgie, which was successful. Mr Blackmore and Joey will attend the Small Animal Veterinary Association conference, where members will discuss budgie ailments.

Nudists who want to build a sunbathing camp at Bottom Spinney- already being called Bare Bottom Spinney - are in for a tough fight. Farmer Ernest Shiner has announced a campaign to defeat the project. He said, “There’s a particularly vicious species of horsefly in Bottom Spinney. They really can bite. I will shift a load of manure down to the edge of the spinney to encourage the flies. They will make things pretty uncomfortable for these nudists.”

At a conference on hospital food, Health Minister Anthony Barber spoke in praise of mangelwurzels. He spoke of his time when he lived on a diet of mangelwurzels in a Polish prison camp. He added that the standard service of food to patients needed to be raised.
