How have we not run out of 3-letter IATA codes for airports?

How have we not run out of 3-letter IATA codes for airports? If it's 26 letters, there'd be only 17,576 codes. Are there really that few airports in the world?

@onghu there are only like 200 countries out there. How many airports a country might need?

@pointlessone
Countries like China, India, US are huge... but maybe, there still aren't that many? We'd run out at 100 x 200 but of course, many countries have much fewer than 100 (Singapore has only 2). -

China has only 39 international airports with three letter codes. India has 26. USA—50. Most have fewer than 10. And some like Malta, Cypress, or Luxembourg have no international airports at all.
