We had a lovely board game evening with colleagues today playing Root. My cute Woodland Alliance fell victim to ruthless propagand from Eyrie Dynasties and couldn't bring peace to the galax... forest.
Had fun still!

@hamatti I just saw this game at a local game store and it looked fun. Wasn’t too cutesy? Also the box says gameplay is about an hour. Was that your experience?

@brianokken Definitely not too cutesy, it's actually a quite deep strategy game. I really like it, I've played it here and there over the years and wished I had more opportunities to play.
Every faction in the game has different actions, rules and scoring mechanics so there's a lot of different ways to play it and it gets better the more you play it as you learn more.
It can be fun for casual, "most players are first-timers" gaming but definitely shines once you start to learn the nuances.

@brianokken @hamatti you need at the beginning 45 Minutes per Player, because every factions plays different, some rules arent intuitiv and if you arent firm with wargames you have to commit with it (if you dont fight, you cant win or protect the group for losing).
I think its a great game, but its not for everybody. -

@brianokken The play time estimate changes a lot based on how well players know the game I'd say.
I think it took us roughly 2 hours to play the first game (including ordering and eating pizza, learning the rules and lots of thinking) but the second game was already faster.

I find Woodland Alliance a really difficult faction to gain points with so I figured I'd go study the forums.
And somehow, everyone considers them one of the most powerful ones and now I feel like I'm just shit at this game

> In a normal game, winning with Woodland Alliance can be deceptively simple.
Yeah, that sounds bad for me.
