This! Many times this!
I have at times tried to track what I read but in the end I’ve found, for me, it takes some of the joy out of it.

@Chigaze
I started keeping a Goodreads page after I kept buying and starting books that I'd previously bought and read, and not liked too much!
I get some reading recommendations from folks that I follow, and I like to set a number at the start of the year, somewhat like "set your intention" in yoga. It's not a competitive thing, but it reminds me of my love of reading whenever I start to falter in my reading journey. I believe that I'm well ahead of the goal I set for 2026. The pace will probably shift as other things take precedence in my life.
I took a look at my list of read books recently, and I really impressed myself with the volume and the diversity of what I've read. -

I can see the utility of maintaining a list of what you've read particularly if you read a lot of books. In my case my available time for reading means I focus on a smaller number of books and series I really, really like.

I never thought about the downside of tracking!It's been all positive for me. It helped me prioritize reading over watching tv or playing games -- and reading has been so much better for my mental health.
When I started paying attention to tracking, I went from <20 books/year to almost 90! And I'm so much happier!

@HollyGoDarkly I think it varies by person and if what you're doing is working for you then definitely continue it. For me I think if I started to focus on how many books I read vs which books I read it wouldn't be as rewarding.
For example over the last six months or so I've had a project of reading the three and half volumes of The History of Middle-Earth that cover the writing of Lord of the Rings combined with a reread of Lord of the Rings while cross referencing with The LOTR Reader's Companion (basically an entire book of annotations). So over that time I've only read those 8ish books plus a small number of others when I took breaks.
I will say my summer reading is substantive as I generally try to read all the Hugo nominees.
