It’s a thing.
I have zero belief in intellectual differences between races. We all bleed red and we're all on the same damn bell curve.
That said, I noticed Asian kids, especially first generation, were statistically much, much better at math in my high school.
Yes, a lot of people suck at it, but that's just because they never put the reps in to master it. I'm not math-oriented and I passed Calc1. Twice.
Incidentally, if you want to know why we need calculus, take a class in algebra-based physics.

@paninid Did you know that if they took the money from the 2008 bank bailout they could have bought a house for every single person in America? It’s true if you can’t count zeroes.
Economists figured out somehow that $50 trillion dollars moved from the 99% to the 1% between 1980 and 2020. Do that math and freak--it's $150,000 for every citizen. You could get elected president with just that on your platform--appropriate it back and cut checks.
You'd probably need bulletproof skin, tho.

@PeterLG @paninid We were forced to buy “graphing calculators” for the first time when I was in 10th grade. The teachers had NO IDEA what you could do with those things. Since we could use it during tests, I asked my teacher if I could program it. She said “if you can figure it out go for it” (which in hindsight was a pretty inspired answer).
Anyway I did a roaring trade that year in a menu driven trig crib sheet BASIC program for those little blue wonders.

I was chatting with someone online who said they never used algebra, to which I asked how they figured out what item at the grocery store is the best bargain when they never all use the same calculation (per container vs per oz vs per pound). They admitted that they'd decided long ago that they would just not worry about that! Sigh!
Algebra is *so* useful in day to day life.@deirdrebeth @paninid 100% Trig, calculus et al for most people nope.
But for me as a nurse throwing down a quick algebraic calculation to give a kid 375 mm of vancomyacin when I have a weird dilution like 835mg in 10ml is so helpful

It's because they routinely math at the lowest difficulty level. In high school, I took my Algebra 2 final exam tripping, just to see if I could do it. -

That one actually kind of being important, and I had a decent job, I took them again sober.

@paninid We have three kids. One is truly not great at math. But she works her ass off and crushed her math SAT and AP Calc exam. Middle kid is good at math but doesn’t love it and doesn’t try too hard at it. Our youngest is a no doubt math genius who can’t do basic arithmetic unless he’s focused on a different, more difficult problem. All I’m saying is that it’s a spectrum and you have to meet people where they are.
One thing I also know to be true is that too many math teachers in K-12 hate math and are bad at teaching it. I tutored my kids in math from algebra through calculus and maybe one teacher in each of their five years did a decent job or even seemed to care. She quit mid-way through middle kid’s final year calculus class. The replacement was awful. We’re home-schooling our youngest for his last two years of high school.
