Just got several samples from an audiobook narrator for a possible audiobook of LITANY FOR A BROKEN WORLD. And wow, most of the voices sound nothing like I'd imagined. Part of the problem for me is I don't like or listen to audiobooks. All the different voices feel overly dramatic in a cringy kind of way. It's totally not the narrator's fault.
I was able to give her specific feedback on accents, cadence, & tone. It'll be interesting to see what she changes. I love her narration.

@LJ Since Frank Muller had his motorcycle accident and then passed away from complications, the audiobook narration world has never been the same. Roy Dotrice gave him a good challenge, but he passed in 2017. Come to think of it, I don't really have any names I really recognize in narration anymore.
(Frank was the only guy Stephen King would let read. Roy holds the Guinness World Record for the most character voices by an individual for an audiobook. He read GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire.)

@LJ And it is so easy for a narrator to sound dramatic in a cringey way. The ones I hate the most are the ones that sound like news anchors delivering a story.
It's really _hard_ to sound natural.

@LJ I'm also not at all fond of audiobooks. They feel like podcasts to me: a way to "listen" to something while you're really doing something else.
I know that many people enjoy both podcasts and audiobooks and good for them!
As an author, seems like you would need to cater to that taste. And it would be weird to have the characters whose voices have lived in your head for quite a while suddenly narrated differently ... -

Her narrative voice is spot on. It feels like she totally gets the story. I have to figure out if the need to have more subtle distinction between the narrative voice & the character voices is a me issue.

I don't audiobook very often. But the few I've listened too always seem overacted at the beginning, but settle in fairly quickly. I later find that I like the exaggerated voice distinction because it helps me keep track of who's doing what.
