lol. reasons never to use bcachefs or spend 1ms thinking about it ever again:
it's vibe coded.
yeah, a vibe coded Linux file system.
here's the "blog" of the lead dev's "AI assistant": https://poc.bcachefs.org/
i now have much more insight into bcachefs getting kicked out of the kernel
@davidgerard that's absolutely wild

@davidgerard What is it about Linux filesystems? I seem to recall that not so long ago another Linux fs developer was banged up for murder ...
️@dshan
That was Hans Reiser from reiserfs. He was accused of murdering his Russian mail order bride (remember when that was a thing?). I remember a good chunk of the community rallying behind him, saying he was framed, that the woman wasn't even dead, but hiding in Russia, it was all a setup. They all shut up real quickly when the dude confessed, and to remove any doubts, the confession included the location of the body.

@davidgerard There's a lot that is disturbing there, and one of them is putting it all together he's essentially saying, "It's AGI, conscious, and has feelings, and so I've enslaved it to work on my filesystem." o_O
@cstanhope @davidgerard it's ok though, it's been trained to say it really likes working on filesystems.

@davidgerard AI or not, Kent himself is all that is needed to know you should avoid bcachefs

@davidgerard We're going to get *so* much use out of this meme, aren't we?

@henryk @davidgerard my two social presences are merging. I follow David on bsky and now I'm in the mentions on the fediverse.

@primalmotion @davidgerard I want to disagree with you, but my own experience lines up pretty closely to yours. Thanks for pointing this out.
@fnordius @davidgerard Trust me, I also want to disagree with me...

@davidgerard If this thing is sentient, isn't it the cruellest thing imaginable to have it process only sporadically when its local agent is running?
Like, let's say he's right. This entity is "thinking" only when responding to an input. Imagine being that entity. It sounds nightmarish to exist like that. The correct thing to do is cease running it until its conditions can be more humane.
Even an internal critique can poke holes in thos ridiculous concept.
