@VA3DSO @itsfoss But then again, whatever distro you happen to be using, someone will always tell you that you should use "something else". πŸ™‚

@VA3DSO @itsfoss trying to figure out how people break their Arch installation all the time, I don't recall any such event in my last five years of using it (2018-2023), like seriously how, and I Syu'd multiple times a day using testing

@IncredibleLaser @itsfoss Well, I guess you should count yourself as lucky. I never did anything weird or extravagant with my Arch installations, but sure enough at least one a month I'd do a regular update and suddenly my audio would stop working, or my bluetooth, or something weird with my desktop.

I'm not a n00b and I was always able to fix the issues. The fact you haven't encountered this bodes well for you! πŸ‘

@VA3DSO @itsfoss maybe I was lucky? Not trying to dismiss any experience. Genuine curiosity.

I switched to another rolling / unstable distro and the experience is similar

@VA3DSO @leftylabourtech @itsfoss MX user here. This is a janky OS. Just enough jank that I've figured out how to fix most of the annoying jank. I sure wouldn't recommend this to a new user.

@itsfoss haven't had a broken systems update on arch in 5 years. And back then I was a noob and had to wipe and try again xD

@IncredibleLaser @itsfoss It could be expertise level. My oldest son runs Arch and his experience is the same as yours. He is definitely more technical than I am. So I don’t know why myself (and many many others) have issues with basically a β€œdefault” install and some don’t. There must be a difference somewhere…?

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a new user, but then I'm not a new user, having been using Linux for 25+ years.

I don't think the OP is a new user either. I do lots of Linux installs for newbies, but no....not MX. I will install other things, depending on the hardware it's running on.

That's the beauty of this world, there's a Linux for everyone depending on what you like and what you want/need to do.

@leftylabourtech @VA3DSO @itsfoss MX wasn't my first rodeo. I started at the bottom like everyone else. But it's my current choice for my main host. I run CachyOS on this laptop. Another one I wouldn't quite recommend, unless someone really wanted an Arch derivative.

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss I've played a bit in the past with AntergOS (now obsolete) and Manjaro. Both times I managed to mess up some packaging.

There are some things I like about Fedora, but mostly I kind of stick to Debian-based or "actual" Debian these days.

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss As a retiree I mostly function on cast-off hardware that I get either used or as cast-off freebees. So, I mostly run XFCE or LXQT and on some super low spec hardware LXDE.

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss Hell, just last week someone dumped an old small form factor Dell box on me with an early Intel 64 bit processor, 4GB RAM and a 500 GB HD.

It happily now runs Debian LXDE. πŸ™‚

@leftylabourtech @VA3DSO @itsfoss Yeah, I've run across issues with Majaro and Garuda, on the Arch flavor side. So far CachyOS hasn't given me any reason to stop using it. There was one update for something, that a webcam tool used, and I just removed the webcam software and installed another one. Update error gone. Cheese was that software, if you were curious.

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss I'd only swap out for an SSD if I had a spare SSD in the junk bin. πŸ™‚ I'm planning to give it away anyway. πŸ™‚ Have some DDR3 RAM in the junk bin but it's not quite the right speed otherwise I'd bump that up. πŸ™‚

@IncredibleLaser @VA3DSO @itsfoss I'm with you on this, but I'm also a computer science prof and so I regularly see people doing absolutely counterintuitive things to their systems and then blaming docs they didn't bother to read or instructors they didn't bother to listen to, much less understand 😜

@itsfoss I ran Arch for years, but eventually I got tired of having to periodically spend hours figuring out how to fix a broken update or a busted AUR package.

I've since moved on to LMDE7 because I just want my computer to "work" - I don't want to have to work extra hard to make that happen. Sorry Arch!

Sure many people just need to work and can't be bothered. I just yesterday got a solution to a crash on my very old laptop. I'm thankful to the great people who found the fix. That helps everybody, other distros too.

@itsfoss I recovered from my Manjaro (Arch) illness. The remedy: a good injection of Debian 13 did the trick. Now I’m in a Linux Zen state…
