@itsfoss I recovered from my Manjaro (Arch) illness. The remedy: a good injection of Debian 13 did the trick. Now I’m in a Linux Zen state…

@itsfoss I ran Arch for years, but eventually I got tired of having to periodically spend hours figuring out how to fix a broken update or a busted AUR package.

I've since moved on to LMDE7 because I just want my computer to "work" - I don't want to have to work extra hard to make that happen. Sorry Arch!

@VA3DSO @itsfoss trying to figure out how people break their Arch installation all the time, I don't recall any such event in my last five years of using it (2018-2023), like seriously how, and I Syu'd multiple times a day using testing

@VA3DSO @itsfoss I've mostly settled into using #MXLinux the last number of years. It's a mix of #Debian and Debian-based lightweight #antix, along with a few ideas borrowed from the obsolete (Debian-based) Mepis distro.

          It's pretty solid.

@VA3DSO @itsfoss But then again, whatever distro you happen to be using, someone will always tell you that you should use "something else". 🙂

              @IncredibleLaser this.
But I guess some people have bad hardware or break it themself by using the aur and other sources.

@IncredibleLaser @itsfoss Well, I guess you should count yourself as lucky. I never did anything weird or extravagant with my Arch installations, but sure enough at least one a month I'd do a regular update and suddenly my audio would stop working, or my bluetooth, or something weird with my desktop.

I'm not a n00b and I was always able to fix the issues. The fact you haven't encountered this bodes well for you! 👍

@VA3DSO @itsfoss maybe I was lucky? Not trying to dismiss any experience. Genuine curiosity.

I switched to another rolling / unstable distro and the experience is similar

@IncredibleLaser @itsfoss It could be expertise level. My oldest son runs Arch and his experience is the same as yours. He is definitely more technical than I am. So I don’t know why myself (and many many others) have issues with basically a “default” install and some don’t. There must be a difference somewhere…?

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss I definitely wouldn't recommend it to a new user, but then I'm not a new user, having been using Linux for 25+ years.

I don't think the OP is a new user either. I do lots of Linux installs for newbies, but no....not MX. I will install other things, depending on the hardware it's running on.

That's the beauty of this world, there's a Linux for everyone depending on what you like and what you want/need to do.

@leftylabourtech @VA3DSO @itsfoss MX wasn't my first rodeo. I started at the bottom like everyone else. But it's my current choice for my main host. I run CachyOS on this laptop. Another one I wouldn't quite recommend, unless someone really wanted an Arch derivative.

@leftylabourtech @VA3DSO @itsfoss I've been having people install the Cinnamon UI for Mint. And yes, the fact there are options available, gives Linux that charm.

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss I've played a bit in the past with AntergOS (now obsolete) and Manjaro. Both times I managed to mess up some packaging.

There are some things I like about Fedora, but mostly I kind of stick to Debian-based or "actual" Debian these days.

@leftylabourtech @VA3DSO @itsfoss I've been having people install the Cinnamon UI for Mint. And yes, the fact there are options available, gives Linux that charm.

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss As a retiree I mostly function on cast-off hardware that I get either used or as cast-off freebees. So, I mostly run XFCE or LXQT and on some super low spec hardware LXDE.

@mrgrumpymonkey @VA3DSO @itsfoss Hell, just last week someone dumped an old small form factor Dell box on me with an early Intel 64 bit processor, 4GB RAM and a 500 GB HD.

It happily now runs Debian LXDE. 🙂
