Clearing some stuff away at the end of a lesson today, second year (~13yo) students milling around. One has a 3D printed model that looks like a particularly tough starfish.
Me: "Is that Rocky?"
Student: "You know Rocky?!"
M: "Amaze, amaze, amaze! Have you read the book?"
S: "No...but the film is SOOOO good!"
M: "Book is better, there's loads more!"
S: "MORE?!" *starts bouncing up and down*Genuinely think I need to start Project "Project Hail Mary" as a science/book club thing.

I'm a massive #AndyWeir fan, just on the basis of #TheMartian and PHM. Not actually read Artemis. But the influence he's having on high school students is huge. I've had at least one, per year, sometimes more, of my prefects mention The Martian as an influence in their choice to do science, and I'm seeing more, younger, students being excited by #ProjectHailMary

@sharif So galaxies...when my grandmother was at school there was one, and we had these things called "spiral nebulae", and the entire universe was about 100,000 light years across.
Then it was bigger. A lot bigger. I mean, you think it's a long way to the shops, that's nothing compared to how much bigger it got...

Artemis is great too. The main character is anwesome and it’s a fun read. I was stunned to realise that Weir also wrote the short story ‘The Egg’ which I randomly caught on a forum years and years ago, and which stayed with me ever since. Need to see the PHM film!
