    @Strandjunker I'd much rather have a fully "vote by mail" system in every state than a national holiday.

    That means ballots are automatically sent by mail to all registered voters. Completed ballots can be mailed back or taken to an official drop box. The system should also include provisions for homeless voters, voters with disabilities who can't use paper ballots, etc.

    An old article on this:

    Oregon already votes by mail. Here’s what it can teach us in 2020.

    How Oregon adopted a vote-by-mail system.

    @ahimsa_pdx @Strandjunker

    How is anonymity ensured with this method?

    I'm from a country where voting is guaranteed to be anonymous, so I look at this and feel a bit weird.

      @Strandjunker

      Indeed, voting—as a sign of a vibrant democracy—deserves to be celebrated much more than deceased presidents.

      But the incumbent president certainly holds the opposite view.

                Thanks for the screenshot.

                That sounds very reasonable. I wouldn't mind if they implemented the same here, tbh.

                I had to make a tough decision on the last election because they changed the place of voting to somewhere inaccessible for me, and the only disability accommodation they've come up with was taking the urn outside and making me vote in front of people, and therefore my vote wouldn't be secret.

                  @Strandjunker B b but then the GQP would never win again because many more people would be able to get away from work to vote! (especially those who live paycheck to paycheck in hourly jobs)

                  Oh right…. That would be a very good thing. 😉

                    @Strandjunker How about we make election day on a Sunday, like almost every other democracy everywhere, so people don't have to skip work or rush to or from work.

                              @Enema_Cowboy Yeah but it is in the Constitution that there is separation. Churches should not dictate. Want to go to Church on Sunday? Then vote before or after.

                              Does the pastor, rabbi, imam or other tell you how to vote? Tax them!

                                  @benroyce @Strandjunker I think voting needs to be a two day affair, with a mandated time off for everyone.

                                      @nuintari @Strandjunker

                                      i like that

                                      *someone* has to be working, no escaping it

                                      so make it 2 days so the absolutely essential work can be covered by a coworker, then the next day, reversed

                                      @benroyce @Strandjunker Yeap, this.

                                      Also, voting is mandatory.

                                      You can abstain all you want, but you HAVE to show up and cast a ballot as such.

                                        @nuintari @Strandjunker

                                        i used to disagree

                                        that if you make voting mandatory, people will draw dicks on their ballot or do joke votes

                                        and you do see that in places where voting is mandatory

                                        but i've changed my view

                                        you can't force people to care, yes

                                        but enough say they "care" but then won't do fucking shit to prove it in an extremely effective way: by voting

                                        so now i think getting enough of those lazy entitled assholes off their asses and voting outweighs the sabotage/ vandalism effect

                                          @benroyce @Strandjunker Yes, this. Some people will always be fuckasses, but more will just fucking actually vote.

                                          We get this, then we fix our two party system. Ranked choice...
